Te Whītau Heke

Woven in 2024.
Meaning ‘threads tying generations together’
This kākahu was inspired by the thought of blood and the strength that flows in our veins. I imagined that the wearer would be lifted with the thought of their whakapapa connection to their tipuna, that we are but a dream that they had many generations ago. That with everything we do, we are representing those that have passed and our whānau that are still with us. This kākahu represents how a shared whakapapa of a whānau is what ties us together.
Tāniko patterns include-
Aronui – knowledge of the natural world
Aramoana – connections through water
Niho Taniwha – the story/storytellers
I was thrilled when this kākahu (only the 2nd I have ever woven for sale), was picked up by Whaea Debbie Ngarewa-Packer, the co-leader of Te Pāti Māori. To then see her wear it to the 2024 Koroneihana was even more special.
